Portsmouth Speedway
This is a shot from about 1954 of the old Portsmouth Speedway which was
located along Rt. 52.west of Portsmouth. Several drivers who did some of their
early racing here went on to NASCAR and other series. Names like Nelson
Stacy, Gene Comstock, Johnny Patterson, Tommy Ringstaff, Pop McGinnis
and Junior Spencer all went on to race in the NASCAR series. Local stars like
Dean Knittel, and Wayne McGuire were top drivers here in the midwest. Indy
car racer Gordon Johncock ran there. The track, which was oiled dirt its first
year (1952) closed in 1962, but the paved surface itself remains intact. It is
now used as an RV park.  Photo sent by Craig Shaw
